Cloud computing is not only an exciting technology revolution, it is also about fundamental marketing and business model innovation.  One can no longer simply ask “how much” but rather one must start with the question “what’s the business model?”.  This blog is focused on the agile business strategies and exceptional marketing and sales innovation that is occurring in the world of enterprise cloud software.  I’ll call out the good, the great and the dumb…all with the aim of helping all of us who are involved in this field to do better.

Currently I’m an Executive in Residence (EIR) at Matrix Partners in Palo Alto.  I’ve been a silicon valley technology executive  for over 20 years.  Half of my career has been spent as CEO of two different enterprise software companies where I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the most innovative and capable people imaginable and also the good fortune to see both companies acquired by large public companies.

It’s my belief that the most successful companies have a simple strategy that is well executed through a balance of great products and great marketing.  Balance does not necessarily mean equal and there are many examples of success where one competency is considerably stronger than the other.  But for any given market, there is a necessary “sum” below which one will fail and above which one greatly increases the probability of success.

I live in Menlo Park with my wife Kathy, twin sons Greg and Jono and Comet (the cat).
